Currently, the "mask tool" is the weakest link in the tools. This weakness comes from the fact that each mask is tied to only 1 layer. This means that if you want to mask something with the same mask, you will have to create the exact mask again on another layer.
The ability to use the same mask on different layers although situational is currently not possible at all. I propose 3 different updates:
1- Mask Layer:
Why not have "mask only" layers? Adding a mask layer means more versatility in terms of masking above or below (you could tie different layers to the same mask layer, something like how the masking in photoshop works, you could select a mask layer to affect your different layers brush work. 2- Mask Duplication:
Leave masks tied to each layer, but add a duplication for the entire mask layer. so the entire mask on layer A could be duplicated in the same place, for layer B.3- Better Masks:
Leave masks tied to each layer. Make masks like shapes/paths in terms of viewing, editing, selecting(multiple), copying, and pasting. Add a button under each layer to "edit mask" (not mask effects).
Open a menu for masks that are labled (labels dont really matter as long as its a clickable selectable list)
Highlight the edge of the mask with a neutral color like gray like how the "move area" function in the mask tool does.
When area is selected, highlight the edge with green like how the "move area" function does right now.
Outline the entire selected area with the classic light gray rectangle and yellow rotation circle that the stamps have.
I personally prefer 3, but its a lot of work, 2 can be a quick temporary fix.
