Use the pathtool for lighting, shadowing and the shifting of color/texture. Allow to set the minimum and maximum transparency range for a path and then assigned the starting side.
The end result would be paths that can be used in ways that reflect light, shadows, and distance on a map. Either draw in your own sun rays, have a regional path fade into the horizon, or create minute landscape color changes utilizing the hue filter.

Would love to see many of the options you get in a typical "photoshop" editing software.

It would be very useful to have some shadow paths for adding custom shadows with the new line path tool, instead of using the brush tool
