Inkarnate's Generate tool for world maps is a great idea that could save a ton of time when creating world maps, but currently feels far too limited to be useful. At the moment you have no real choice but to blindly click ‘generate’ hoping to eventually find a landmass configuration that looks appealing. At the moment, the main control is essentially just a Water Percent slider, with no real control over where landmasses are generated or what overall structure the world has.
I'd love to see Generate expanded with Generation Templates that provide a broad structure for the generation.
For example:
Pangaea / World Island – One large landmass surrounded by ocean.
Archipelago – Numerous islands distributed across the map.
Disaster Archipelago – A fragmented landmass suggesting an ancient cataclysm.
Continents – A configurable number of major continents, with optional smaller islands.
Supercontinent – One enormous continent with smaller surrounding landmasses.
These could then have additional controls such as continent count, approximate size, land/water percentage and island density.
It would also be great to take some inspiration from the Heroes of Might and Magic III map generator and allow existing Inkarnate stamps to be placed procedurally according to the selected template and settings.
For example, selecting Volcanic could cause volcanic/mountain stamps to be distributed in an appropriate pattern. Selecting Jungle could populate a particular region with jungle/vegetation assets.
Inkarnate already has several ways of creating masks. It would be great if masking functionality could also be extended to Generate.
For example, the user could create a mask and tell Generate to:
Only generate landmasses inside the mask.
Only generate landmasses outside the mask.
If Procedural Stamp / Texture placement is implemented, this would go hand-in-hand with masks, allowing users to do things like create a volcanic archipelago inside the mask.
This would make it possible to constrain generation to a particular region, preserve manually-created geography, or combine procedural and manually-designed terrain.
