I would vote for buttons that allows you to pick if the clipping mask applies to the BG, FG or both (for the situations where the clipping mask covers some of both)

Aifur Gott: what would it show under if you picked both? I agree a toggle for bg and fg would be nice

Dread Maps: it would show INFINITY! :D ….my suggestion would be if both are selected it then shows whichever FG/BG layer has been applied to that location. I've also realized there are two ways you could show either FG or BG: Example, I place a clipping mask in a location where half of it covers an area of FG and half of it covers an area of BG. There are 5 ways I could see the clipping mask interact at that location:
Show FG underneath entire clipping mask
Show FG if found underneath clipping mask
Show BG underneath entire clipping mask
Show BG if found underneath clipping mask
Show FG and BG if found underneath clipping mask
