Orc Barrels are broken in a weird way

Finally, I'm not sure what to make of the barrels. First, how would a barrel wind up broken in that way? If you crudely ripped off the top/bottom, it wouldn't be broken like that. I could see it being a barrel crudely constructed from scavenged planks, but what use is a barrel with no top and bottom? How would one use it in a map regardless? I can't think of a use for jagged barrel with no top or bottom. (I personally think it'd be best if it was a barrel made of scavenged planks, and had a bottom to it so it could function for storage. Would require a version where it's standing up as well, though.
