Octagonal grids

I would like an option for octagonal grids. Though they are not a mainstay for the ttrpg sphere I like to use them in games so that I can have players roll 1d8 in instances of travel in a random direction. It helps maintain the illusion of 360 degree movement and allows travel in each of the 4 cardinal directions and 4 between point directions.

I think square grid is best for this since you are either moving across edges (4 cardinal directions) or across corners (4 in-between directions). I personally like hex grid with 1d12 to randomize as 1 o'clock to 12 o'clock: 6 edges and 6 corners.

What would one of these look like? Octagons can't form a repeating tiling (in euclidean space anyway) so you would need to add smaller squares as filler.
