Sometimes the Sales Data (Account Summary) shows 0 sales—which is the actual, accurate number, as we've verified—while the Marketplace displays a sales count of 1, for example.
Most likely, during the product review process, the item was assigned to a tester account. The Marketplace frontend recorded this, as the number of owners increased by 1. However, no actual sale occurred, which explains the discrepancy between the Sales Data (Account Summary) and the number displayed on the Marketplace. One records actual sales, while the other tracks the number of owners.
Suggested further testing:
Granting ownership for free (without a sale) to see if the number increases further.
Granting ownership, then processing a refund (Check if the number increased, if it stays the same after the refund, and if a subsequent sale or account assignment increases it again...).
These tests are important—and the bug itself is significant—because this loophole could allow a Creator to push their product into the "popular" categories through artificial transactions, refunds, or other methods that don't actually involve real money.
